Why MFA Is No Longer Optional for Microsoft 365

Passwords alone are no longer enough. That is not opinion. It is reality.

Most breaches do not involve hacking. They involve stolen credentials. Phishing emails, reused passwords, and compromised devices are all it takes.

Multi factor authentication stops the majority of these attacks.

Microsoft now assumes MFA should be enabled. Many security features and insurance policies already require it.

The pushback usually comes from inconvenience. People worry MFA will slow staff down or cause login issues.

In practice, MFA:

  • Adds seconds, not minutes
  • Prevents unauthorized access
  • Protects email, files, and identities
  • Reduces risk dramatically

If MFA is not enabled on your Microsoft 365 tenant, you are exposed. It is that simple.

This is one of the easiest security wins available, and one of the most ignored.
